Chapter 02 Bloomglow

BloomGlow: Perception as Interface

Perception as Interface

BloomGlow approaches perception not as a response, but as an interface—where material mediates how light is held, filtered, and released. Inspired by the quiet vitality of sea anemones, this work examines how softness and containment can become active agents in shaping sensory experience.

Bloomglow

BloomGlow is composed of a rigid blue bioplastic base and a thin yellow bioplastic membrane, whose softness is precisely controlled through material formulation. The base functions as a container—stable, grounding—while the membrane is gathered and inserted like a bouquet, held in tension between structure and delicacy.

Light emerges through this relationship. It does not simply illuminate, but appears to breathe through the membrane, responding to thickness, translucency, and curvature. Here, material is not a neutral support for light; it actively shapes how light is perceived. The interface is neither hidden nor technical—it is visible, tactile, and quietly expressive.

Bloomglow in detail

At close range, the membrane reveals subtle variations—creases, overlaps, and gradients of light. These micro-adjustments slow perception down, asking the eye to linger where material and illumination quietly negotiate with one another.

Bloomglow in the dark

Bloomglow frames perception as something cultivated rather than consumed—an intimate exchange shaped by material, light, and the time spent with them.
